Mercy Medical University has received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for its housemanship programme, together with an upward review of its approved training quota.
The approval followed a comprehensive two-day accreditation visit conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday by an MDCN delegation led by the Council’s Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma.
Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Chief Medical Director, Provost and other principal officers of the University.
A significant milestone
The Council granted the University full housemanship accreditation and approved an increase in its training quota after confirming its readiness and compliance with the required standards.
Comprehensive facility assessment
During the visit, the MDCN team assessed the University’s preparedness for housemanship training and inspected the academic and clinical facilities required for accreditation.
The assessment covered Mercy University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Mercy University Teaching Hospital at the Telemu Campus, and other relevant infrastructure supporting medical education and clinical practice.
Following the exercise, the Council certified that the University had demonstrated the readiness, institutional capacity and professional competence required to provide quality housemanship training. It subsequently granted the programme full accreditation and approved an increase in the University’s training quota.
Advancing medical education and clinical excellence
The accreditation represents another significant milestone in Mercy Medical University’s continued development as a centre for medical education, research and clinical excellence. The increased quota will enable the institution to provide structured and supervised postgraduate clinical experience to more medical graduates.
